Barnes &#8211; November 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m\nafraid you\u2019re going to have to wait a little longer,\u201d said her Mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d\nasked Bethany. \u201cWhat\u2019s happened this time?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cApparently\nthe training centre was broken into and the dogs stolen,\u201d said her mother. \u201cI\u2019m\nso sorry my love but you have been put on the emergency list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\ntakes months to train guide dogs,\u201d said Bethany. \u201cNow I might not get to\nUniversity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bethany\nrushed up to her room and locked the door, and had a good cry into her pillow. Eventually\nshe sat up, determined not to be beaten by another set-back. There had to be a\nway out of this she thought and moping isn\u2019t going to solve anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe\na good walk around the park might help clear her mind. She had a specific walk\nthat she did every day, that had good guide rails and pavement edges which\nenabled her to walk with only her electronic stick and new Sonar system. A\ndevice that enabled her to \u2018see\u2019 objects and warn her of moving people. But of\ncourse, these were only aids and couldn\u2019t really help her if she went to new,\nunfamiliar environments. She needed her guide dog to be truly independent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\nhad already bonded with her new puppy, during its training period but all that\neffort was now out of the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGet\na grip girl,\u201d she said out loud, when she walked down the stairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSorry,\u201d\nsaid her mother. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJust\ntalking to myself,\u201d said Bethany. \u201cI\u2019m going for a walk. Is it sunny outside?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d\nsaid Alexa. \u201cSun all morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bethany\nkissed her mother, \u201cI\u2019ll be in the park,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHave\nyou got your phone?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOf\ncourse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd\ndoor key?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t\nfuss mother, I\u2019ll be fine,\u201d she said closing the door behind her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\nwalked along the familiar pavement, unconsciously counting as she went, until\nshe reached the gate by the park. Her parents had purchased the house many\nyears ago because of its proximity to this park. They were now reluctant to\nmove to a bigger house in the country that they deserved, in case it disrupted\nBethany\u2019s life. Which was one of the reasons she wanted to go to UNI so they\ncould move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\narrived at the road, needing to cross to get to her favourite coffee shop. She\nsensed a presence beside her. She found and pressed the \u2018cross\u2019 button but\nseemed to be waiting an age before the beeps went and cars were still going\npast at what seemed, reckless speeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDo\nyou need some help?\u201d growled a voice beside her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo,\nI\u2019m waiting for the beeps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\ncould wait a long time,\u201d said the voice. \u201cThe lights are out of order.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh,\u201d\nsaid Bethany, torn between her desire to sit down in the sunshine with her\nchocolate covered cappuccino and the fear of accepting help from a stranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll\nstop the traffic and tell you when to go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\nwas screech of complaining tyres, before silence indicated that everyone was\nindeed stationary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOk\nyou can cross now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThank\nyou, sorry for inconveniencing you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\nwalked to her local coffee outlet and waited to be seated by the waitress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHello\nBethany, your usual table is free. I\u2019ll get your drink,\u201d said the waitress. \u201cIs\nyour uh, companion, having something today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat\ncompanion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMe,\u201d\nsaid the gruff voice. \u201cYes, I\u2019ll have a teacake please.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToasted?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo\nneed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo\nwhy are you impinging in my space?\u201d asked Bethany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWell\nto be honest it\u2019s the caf\u00e9\u2019s space,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\ncan\u2019t stop you then.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnyway,\nyou looked a bit down and I thought I could bring you some good cheer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nwaitress brought out her drink and the teacake. Bethany sensed a fierce heat on\nher cheek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat\nwas that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh,\nthey never toast the teacakes to my satisfaction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\nbring your own blowtorch for that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSort\nof,\u201d said her companion. \u201cSo back to you, why are you so down?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\nlost my guide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\ncan\u2019t see anyone,\u201d said her gruff companion, looking around. \u201cDid you lose them\nin the park?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo\nstupid,\u201d said Bethany. \u201cMy guide-dog.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t\nsee any stray dogs either.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo,\nyou wouldn\u2019t,\u201d said Bethany. \u201cHe never arrived, it was stolen from the training\ncentre.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh,\nthat\u2019s terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes,\nwhich is why I\u2019d like to be alone with my thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhy\ndo you need a guide dog?\u201d said the gruff voice. \u201cExcept for the broken lights\nyou were doing fine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes,\nbut I need one before I go to university,\u201d explained Bethany. \u201cI won\u2019t be able\nto get around the huge university campus without one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s\nnot good then is it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll\nleave you to your thoughts then.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThank\nyou.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOK,\nsee you tomorrow then.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTomorrow?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWell,\nyou\u2019ll need someone to help you across the road \u2018til the lights are fixed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSuit\nyourself.\u201d Bethany felt her companion leave and heard the screeching of tyres\nas he crossed the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\npointed the phone towards her departing companion and took what she hoped would\nbe a useful photo with her smart phone. Her computer should be able to\ntranslate the image into words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWas\nit bothering you,\u201d said the kindly waitress, as Bethany stood up to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo.\nI think he was trying to do me a favour.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShall\nI direct you across the road?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes\nplease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once\nhome she copied the photo into her computer but all it said was \u2018cars and horse\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\nmust admit I didn\u2019t hear the clip clop of a horse, very strange, anyway horses\ndon\u2019t talk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSorry\ndear,\u201d said her mother. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNothing,\nmy computer is playing up a bit, that\u2019s all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nnext day she wanted to find out if her gruff companion would turn up again,\nwhen she went for her usual walk. She had a good feeling about him and if he\ndid turn up, she would at least find out his name, if nothing else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHello,\u201d\nsaid the gruff voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh,\nit\u2019s you again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfraid\nso. Do you want help on the road it\u2019s so busy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes\nplease, if you don\u2019t mind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once\nsettled down in her usual seat after the usual tyre squealing, Bethany sipped\nat her chocolate coated froth. \u201cSo, do you have a name?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\nthink it\u2019s Moron.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMoron,\u201d\nqueried Bethany. \u201cWhy do you think that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s\nwhat the drivers call out at me after they\u2019ve stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo,\nbut what did your parents call you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\nnever knew my parents,\u201d said the voice. \u201cIt was Easter and I was left in an egg\nbasket.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat\nexactly are you?\u201d asked Bethany. \u201cI notice the waitress called you It and my\ncomputer is confused by your image.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\ndon\u2019t know, do you want to feel me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bethany\ngingerly put her hands where she expected to find a head. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWell,\nyou are different &#8211; long nose like a horse but scaley skin. Hot nostrils, you\nmust take care you might be ill. Large ears and a huge row of teeth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s\nwhat I suspected, I think you might be a dragon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReally\nthat\u2019s exciting, I think,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWell,\nI\u2019m not going to call you Moron,\u201d said Bethany. \u201cDo you think you might be a\nJapanese Dragon?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo\nidea.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\nshall call you Shinto.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShinto,\nthat\u2019s nice,\u201d he said. \u201cCan I be your guide dog?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGuide\ndog?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWell,\nyou don\u2019t have one and I would be great at it,\u201d said Shinto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes,\nbut a bit frightening for everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIsn\u2019t\na fierce dog also frightening?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot\nas much as a dragon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhy\nnot give me a try, what harm would it do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bethany\ncould think of a million harms that a dragon could do but refrained from\ncomment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\nhave to go to the Natural History Museum tomorrow,\u201d said Bethany. \u201cIt\u2019s part of\nmy pre-studies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\nsounds exciting, where shall I meet you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll\nmeet in the park as usual, it\u2019s not far to the museum,\u201d said Bethany, sure that\nher parents wouldn\u2019t approve of her choice of a guide dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bethany\nleapt out of bed excited by the thought of going to the museum unaided, also\nshe would have a guide to talk her through the exhibits. She hadn\u2019t asked if\nShinto could read but at least he could describe things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\ndug out the bright yellow guide dog coat she had been given in the expectation\nof her trained dog. Umm, she thought, feeling the small waistcoat, oh well it\nwill have to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\ndonned a backpack with some drinks and her iPad and said goodbye to her mum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHello,\u201d\nsaid Shinto. \u201cWhere to?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHere\nwe are,\u201d said Bethany taking out her iPad and showing him the map of where they\nneeded to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDo\nyou have a satellite image,\u201d said Shinto. \u201cThat would be more useful for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSure,\u201d\nand switched from map to satellite. \u201cHere, see where the claw is pointing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bethany\ntried to ignore the hooting and car crashes as they walked along the pavement.\n\u201cAre you the only dragon around?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cProbably\nthe first one in this city.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\nexplains things. I hope they let you in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhy\nwouldn\u2019t they, guide dogs are always let in, surely?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDogs\nyes, not sure how many other guide dragons are around though,\u201d said Bethany.\n\u201cBut I have an idea, do you know how to walk like an Egyptian?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo\nwhat\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWalk\nvery slowly and stiffly like a robot,\u201d said Bethany \u201cI\u2019ll pretend to be\ndirecting you with my smart phone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shinto\nstarted walking as directed and Bethany acted out controlling him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arriving\nat the entrance, there was indeed an enquiry about her companion, until Bethany\ntold the guard that there was no ban on guide animals, live or robotic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBesides\nit will be an added attraction,\u201d hearing the excited children clamouring to get\nclose to Shinto. \u201cBe careful, he might bite.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\nkicked at Shinto\u2019s shin who promptly opened his jaw and chattered his teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shinto\nled Bethany through the exhibits, subtly unpicking the locks so that she could\nfeel the exhibits to get an understanding of the skeletal make up of birds and\nanimals. Shinto explained which objects were merely bones and which were\nstuffed animals, allowing her to be as delicate as necessary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All\nwas going well until they reached the dinosaur section. Bethany read the\nbraille inscription that there was a \u2018live\u2019 Tyrannosaurus Rex on display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDo\nyou want to see T-rex,\u201d asked Bethany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGreat,\na pop concert,\u201d said Shinto. \u201cIs that what all the screaming is about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo,\nTyrannosaurus Rex. Creatures that died out 65 million year ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo,\nwhat\u2019s all the screaming?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\ndon\u2019t know?\u201d said Bethany. \u201cWhat can you see?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\nlooks like my dad and it\u2019s swinging a child to and fro in its jaw.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\nhave to stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bethany\nfelt a rush of air as Shinto flew into the great hall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More\nscreams from the children, no doubt at the sight of a full dragon, then a cheer\nand a blast of hot air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s\ngoing on,\u201d said Bethany, as she heard a crunching and the agony of twisted\nmetal and smelt burnt material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll\nsorted,\u201d said Shinto, once again by her side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cExcuse\nme,\u201d said a voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIs\nthis your dragon?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWell\nnot mine exactly but he\u2019s with me,\u201d said Bethany, worried that Shinto had done\nsomething dreadful. \u201cIs there a problem?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes\nand no,\u201d said the voice. \u201cI\u2019m Professor Grant of the museum.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBethany,\nand this is Shinto\u201d said Bethany, holding out her hand. \u201cWhat went on?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWell,\na child had climbed onto my automaton T-Rex and had got trapped in its teeth, just\nas the show started,\u201d said Professor Grant. \u201cShe was in danger of being injured\nor even killed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s\nterrible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\nwould have been, except for your dragon,\u201d said the professor. \u201cShinto rescued\nthe child and as the automaton seemed out of control and set it on fire.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh\nno.\u201d said Bethany. \u201cI\u2019m sorry to have spoilt your display but I can\u2019t see\notherwise I would have stopped him. I don\u2019t have any money to fix your T-Rex.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo\nneed, far from it,\u201d he said. \u201cThe children think he\u2019s a hero and want to thank\nhim.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh,\nalright,\u201d said Bethany. \u201cShinto go over and say hello to the children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bethany\nheard the children clambering all over Shinto and excitingly asking him\nquestions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile\nhe\u2019s doing this, maybe we could have a drink at the caf\u00e9.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d\nlike that,\u201d said Bethany, in need of a hot drink after all the worrying events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo,\nwhat do you know abut your dragon, where does he come from?\u201d asked Professor\nGrant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo\nidea,\u201d said Bethany. \u201cHe came into my life a few days ago, out of nowhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWell,\nhe\u2019s a great asset to the museum. Do you think he\u2019d like a job? He\u2019d be the\nbest attraction, ever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\nthink he was hoping to be my guide, seeing as my dog was stolen,\u201d said Bethany.\n\u201cAnd I don\u2019t have an alternative at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\ncould make you an automaton instead,\u201d said the professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And\nso, it was, that the museum had its very own, live, T-rex and Bethany had her\nvery own guide robot.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A short story of fun and laughter for all those who are struggling with lockdown. \u00a9 Peter L.
